Construction
What do you want in your room? What do you want in your house? You can have just about anything. This section of the website will help you build what your heart (or your girlfriend) desires.
Carpentry skills are not only impressive, but they can improve your space remarkedly. Consider some construction if you are looking to save money or space, or simply for the enjoyment. Browse the links on the left for instructions and diagrams.
Basic Advice
Always remember to plan out your project before you spend any money or waste any time. Measure your space, calculate your expenses, and consult with your friends.
When undergoing a project, don't forget about campus resources. Many campuses have a woodshop, often for the theater. You may be able to use a table saw or drill press to save time. Also contact the woodworking or carpentry club, or start your own. It always pays to use the school's money and resources before your own.
Other considerations:
- Material transporation- can you fit the lumber in or on your car?
- Construction space- do you have enough space for constructing a large bar or loft?
- Have you considered clean up? Wood chips are certainly much easier to clean up on a tile floor or outdoors
- If you plan on painting or staining, you will most likely want to leave the wood outside or in a basement to dry. Hours of toxic paint fumes in a room can be unpleasant and dangerous
- If possible, budget enought time to finish the project all at once. Motivation dissipates quickly. It is more efficient to complete the project in one sitting while you are focused and you remember all of the details.
